Three Guesses
Bob Nolan
Original copyright: September 24, 1985
You gave me just three guesses
And my heart confesses
That I know not what I have done
That you should leave me here so lonely
With three guesses only.
I only needed one.
Somebody new stole your heart from my heart
But time changes all, that is true,
For I saw you cry alone here last night.
The tables have turned on you.
So, darling, now whose heart’s confessing?
And, if you’re still guessing,
I’ll give you three guesses, too.
Somebody new takes your place in my heart
And so goes the turn of the tide
And somebody new steals someone from you.
Now you’ll be the one who’ll cry.
So, darling, now whose heart’s confessing
And, if you’re still guessing,
I’ll give you three guesses, too.
ABOUT THIS SONG
One of Bob Nolan's post-Sons of the Pioneers songs, "Three Guesses" was not registered for copyright until September 24, 1985, five years after his death, when Bob's daughter discovered his home demo acetate. Bob Nolan sang and whistled, accompanied only by his little Gibson guitar. He had an old home recording machine and he made his own wax demo 78s on it. Many years later, his grandson rented a record player and transferred the old demos to tape with indifferent success. The words above were transcribed from this tape. We were unable to find sheet music or even lead sheets and the song was never commercially recorded.
